A CHILD was assaulted by a pensioner on board a bus in Greenock.

Police are investigating the incident which happened at around 12.20pm on Monday.

The five-year-old boy, who has autism, was assaulted on the 545 McGill's service which was travelling along Grieve Road.

It is understood that the assault happened after the child became upset on the bus, and the pensioner is accused of hitting him with his walking stick.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We have received a report of an assault which occurred on the 545 McGills bus in the Grieve Road area of Greenock at around 12:20pm on Monday, July 16.

"We are looking to trace a man in his 70s, of medium build and he has grey hair. He was wearing thick framed glasses and carrying a triangle bottomed walking aid.

"We would appeal to anyone who was on the bus or who has any information regarding this incident to contact police on 101 quoting incident SP20180716-1645."
