WORK is being carried out to return Glasgow Green to its former glory after worrying pictures emerged of worn-out grass covering the beloved park.

The images showed the effect TRNSMT and the sizzling heatwave had on the iconic location, with aerial shots displaying stretches of brown grass.

However, Glasgow City Council have confirmed it is being returfed, as is standard procedure following major events.

It is understood much of the grass is still alive and will benefit from wetter weather which has since returned to the city.

Social media user Thomas Clay posted an image showing the grass being returfed, saying: "Seems a lot of expense and work to fix."

The next major event to take place in the park is GO LIVE! as part of the European Championship Games next month.

A spokesman for the council said: “The recent heatwave has been the hottest and driest since the record breaking summer of 1976.

“In the circumstances it is inevitable the heat and lack of rain will have impact on the look of our parks.

“Like many of us in recent weeks, the grass has effectively suffered from sunburn.

“It must be stressed, however, that the grass at the Green has not died, with the vitally important root systems still very much alive.

“There is further rain forecast for the end of this week and that will aid the recovery of the grass as will a general return to the weather more usually experienced in Glasgow.

“The new turf being laid across an area of around 4000 square metres was already planned as part of the events programme for the Green.

“The income generated from hiring out our parks is used to support the Land and Environment Services department, which is directly responsible for our parks.”
