A record number of participants signed up for clinical research studies last year, latest figures show.
More than 725,000 people joined studies in England in 2017/18, the highest number ever recorded, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) said.
This is an increase of around 10% from the year before, when 665,000 were recruited.
Dr Jonathan Sheffield, chief executive of the NIHR clinical research network, said the studies give NHS trusts access to new treatments and help boost the economy.
“By taking part in life sciences industry studies patients are participating in new and innovative forms of treatment which will provide evidence for future improved care for all patients,” he said.
“The knowledge gained could provide the evidence to license new treatments in the NHS securing healthy lives for future generations.”
