The official mascots for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics have been unveiled.
Miraitowa – which takes its name from a combination of the Japanese words for future and eternity – will represent the Olympics.
The Paralympic mascot is called Someity, which comes from a popular cherry blossom variety called Someiyoshino, and also sounds a bit like the English phrase “so mighty”.
The designs were selected after voting by five million schoolchildren across Japan ahead of the Games, which will run from July 24 to August 9, 2020.
