FED UP residents are calling for a permanent solution to constant fly tipping in a City Centre street.

Locals claim their community has been blighted by rubbish dumping for the past two years.

The hot spot for filthy litter louts is Cambridge Street at its junction with Buccleugh Street, which community members said is almost never clean.

Council bosses have issued fixed penalty notices to a number of residents - but the problem persists.

They have also warned a local business to stop using the street as a rubbish dump.

William Beckett, of Garnethill Neighbourhood Watch, said: “This had been all cleaned up.

“Yet just a few days later another build up of rubbish appears.

“I’m totally sick of it - we must accommodate animals as it is only them that would do a dreadful thing like this.

“I plan to be in touch with Community Safety Glasgow about temporary CCTV and will contact environmental enforcement as well.”

The junction of the two Garnethill streets houses three large recycling bins and one metal bin used for a local tenement block of flats.

It is not possible for cleansing services to access the backcourt of the tenement to collect rubbish.

And so a wheelie bin was placed in the street.

But some people opt to dump their rubbish on the street next to the bin, leaving filth lying everywhere.

Mrs Wilson, a local resident, said: “This has been going on for two years and it is well over a year since I first started contacting the city council about it and my local MP.

“We have a big clothes donation bin nearby as well as these three large recycling bins and the bin out on the street.

“So people seem to think they can just walk past and dump whatever they like there.

“They are treating us like a community of second class citizens.

“I have to say, there must be local businesses involved too as quite often there is rotten fish carcasses left among the rubbish and on a hot day, well you can imagine.”

The resident, who asked to use only her surname, added: “We are treated with absolute contempt.

“This area has a mega dense population and so there is a strain on cleansing services.

“But there must be a better answer than this.”

Thomas Quinn, a caretaker in a nearby building, added: “It’s terrible. There have been used nappies lying out there for three weeks - it’s disgusting.

“It’s not just rubbish but also larger flytipping. We have mattresses left lying and all sorts.

“The council has said they will deal with it but we are waiting to see what they will do.”

A spokesman for the council said: “Due to significant difficulties with access to a back court on Buccleuch Street, we placed a large wheelie bin in the street for the use of residents at the affected address.

“Unfortunately other residents and businesses in the area have been abusing this facility rather than using their own bins to dispose of their waste.

“We have issued a number of fixed penalty notices against individuals where the necessary evidence has been found as well undertaking regular clear ups.

“However, in an effort to find a longer term solution we intend to remove the wheelie bin and introduce a kerbside collection of refuse sacks three times a week in support of residents at the specific address.

“We will be writing to those residents with further information on the new arrangements.”
