THE niece of legendary rocker Jerry Lee Lewis is to play a special date at a Glasgow song club.

Country singer Mary-Jean Lewis, who lives in Wishaw, will perform at the Seven Song Club at the Tron Theatre tomorrow.

Mary-Jean, is the daughter of the 82-year-old singer’s younger sister Linda Gail Lewis and has lived in the North Lanarkshire town since 2008.

Her set will be interspersed with showbiz stories from her childhood.

The singer has spoken fondly of her childhood memories of growing up with rock ’n’ roll’s original wildman.

She said: “He had this great piano swimming pool which, when you were a kid, was the best thing in the world.

“One time, we flew to Nashville when I was about 12 and he was promoting an album and I got to ride in a limo with Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Jerry.

“I was a kid and didn’t have any idea how important that was.

“But my favourite was meeting Kris Kristofferson – he’s a huge fan of Jerry’s”

Glasgow singer-songwriter Lorraine Wilson and Bensider will also perform at the event, which is hosted by singer songwriter Warren McIntyre of The Starry Skies and celebrates new and established singer songwriters.

He said. “It’s going to be a great night this month with sone of my favourite singers including the amazing Lorraine Wilson and of course Mary Jean.”

Born on September 29, 1935, Jerry Lee Lewis has been described as “rock ’n’ roll’s first great wild man”.

A pioneer of rock ’n’ roll and rockabilly music, Lewis made his first recordings in 1956 at Sun Records in Memphis.

Crazy Arms sold a massive 300,000 copies in the South, but it was his 1957 hit Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On that shot Lewis to fame worldwide.

He followed this with Great Balls of Fire.

Lewis’s rock and roll career faltered in the wake of his marriage to his 13-year-old cousin. However, he is still performing at the age of 82.
