DOZENS of firefighters have rushed to battle a massive blaze in the south west of Glasgow.

More than 40 firefighters in six engines and four support vehicles have been sent to the scene at the former Howford Primary School in Crookston.

The derelict building, on Crookston Road, closed just after the Easter holidays.

Images posted on social media have shown smoke rising above the city. Many internet users have said they can see the smoke from miles away.

One Twitter user at the scene wrote on the site: “Heat is unreal.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokesman told the Evening Times: “We were alerted at 3.49pm on Monday, June 30 to reports of a building fire in Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to the scene at Crookston Road, where firefighters are currently tackling a fire within a single-storey derelict building.”

Police Scotland said “significant” road closures are in place and issued advice to nearby residents.

The force said: “Police Scotland and SFRS are currently dealing with a large fire at a disused building on Crookston Road, Glasgow.

“Significant road closures and diversions are in place.

“We would ask people to try and avoid the area, and to close your windows if you live nearby.”

Glasgow City Council added that Crookston Road is closed between Paisley Road West and Brockburn Road.

Road users should expect significant congestion as traffic attempts to find alternative routes.
