MORE than £4 million is to be spent on new display cases for the redevelopment of the Burrell Collection museum.
Glasgow City Council has recommended two companies for the job for the A-listed museum in Pollok Country Park following a tender bidding process.
Councillors are asked to approve the spending at the Contracts and Property Committee this Thursday.
The Burrell Renaissance will see a 35 per cent increase in gallery space and 83 per cent more space for the public.
Closed for building in 2016, the £66m refurbishment is due to be finished and open to the public free of charge by 2020.
A Glasgow Life spokeswoman said: “The new display cases and display systems, designed by the main project exhibition designers Event Communications in conjunction with museum’s expert conservation staff, will respond to the aesthetic intent of the original cases but will greatly improve the preservation and security of the collections. “
The original cases have been “extremely challenging” due to their weight.
