CELTIC fans have been warned of travel chaos as Glasgow goes into lockdown for the European Championships massive time trial event.

Police have warned of major disruption ahead of the AEK Athens Champions League qualifying match at Parkhead tomorrow.

Around 100 roads are set to be closed as the event gets underway across the city and those which are open are expected to be highly congested resulting in lengthy delays.

While trains between Dalmarnock and Bridgeton are expected to be extremely busy.

In a Facebook post police warned: "Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 8, the roads closed for the @Glasgow2018 time trials should re-open around 6pm.

"If you're going to the Celtic v AEK Athens Champions League qualifying match at Celtic Park please be aware that roads in the city are still expected to be congested.

Glasgow Times:

"Please plan ahead and expect delays before and after the match.

"ScotRail is also advising that Dalmarnock and Bridgeton stations will also be very busy."

Junction 15 of the M8 will be closed while several roads around the East End will be on lockdown. 

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity Michael Matheson said: “The Cycling Time Trial will likely be the biggest test for the Glasgow 2018 transport plan, and the support of the travelling public will be crucial in its success.

“I’d urge people to visit getreadyglasgow.com where there is a raft of advice and links to resources to plan their journey in advance and encourage businesses and major employers to take a more flexible approach to working, if possible.

"Football supporters headed to Celtic Park should also follow this travel advice.

“The Get Ready Glasgow website and Traffic Scotland mobile site have travel information and advice, tailored for Wednesday, August 8.”

Businesses have been advised to allow staff to work from home if at all possible.

While those who do have to travel around the city have been urged to use public transport.

The event on Wednesday will start at the Riverside Museum before travelling into MaryhillBearsdenMilngavie, Strathblane, Lennoxtown, Torrance, Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and Springburn then returning to the City Centre.

In preparation for the race, streets included in the route were subjected to parking restrictions from Monday until midnight on Wednesday.

Council services - including cleansing, waste and recycling - are expected to be delayed across the week.

As race-related vehicles and cyclists will be travelling at speed throughout the day, pedestrians who need to cross the course must do so at designated crossing points.

Most roads in Glasgow will close from 2am on 8 August until 10pm on 8 August.

While smaller councils, such as East Dunbartonshire, have made service arrangements to combat closures outwith the city.
