A CAGE of canaries were left dumped on a doorstep of a house in a North Lanarkshire village.
The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after five canaries were abandoned inside a cage on a doorstep on Mollison Avenue in Harthill.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted after a member of the public handed the cage of canaries into their centre in Lanarkshire after discovering them outside their house on August 19.
Peter Fleming, Manager at the Scottish SPCA’s centre in Lanarkshire, said: “The canaries were found inside their cage on Sunday morning by a member of the public on Mollison Avenue.
“The canaries are now in safe hands, and being cared for by the team at our centre in Lanarkshire. They’ll stay in our care until we can find them a loving forever home.
“If anyone recognises these birds we’d urge them to contact us as we are keen to identify the person responsible for abandoning them.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
