Former West Renfrewshire MSP Trish Godman dies at 79

The politician was MSP from 1999 until she retired in 20011 and was also deputy presiding officer for eight years.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard described Ms Godman as “great fighter for her constituents and for the Labour Party”.

She argued for changes to laws on prostitution, advocating for the criminalisation of people buying sex.

In 2012, two men were jailed for sending suspect packages to Ms Godman, Celtic manager Neil Lennon and the late Paul McBride QC.

Jurors heard how a package which tested positive for explosives was delivered to her constituency office in Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, caused the evacuation of the building.

Former Labour MSPs Frank McAveety said Ms Godman was "the best of Labour" and never lost her commitment to ensuring opportunity for all.

Jackson Carlaw, MSP for Eastwood, tweeted: " A sad end to the weekend’s news; Trish Godman while Deputy Peesiding Officer was a politician who led with determination on key issues including much improved investment in bespoke wheelchair availability.
