THE opening ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has been nominated for a Scottish Comedy Award.

The ceremony, which took place at Celtic Park, is up for an award in the Best Event category alongside Still Game Live at the Hydro, Eddie Izzard's Scotland Please Don't Go gig and Aye Right How No!, a political comedy show at The Stand in Glasgow on referendum night.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "We are absolutely delighted the opening ceremony has been recognised in this way.

"There is no question the opening ceremony set the scene for what became the best ever Commonwealth Games.

"It was a fantastic occasion and the award is a tribute to the effort, enthusiasm and creativity of all those involved."

The awards take place on April 27 at the Blythswood Hotel in Glasgow and voting is only open to Scottish comedians and those who work in the Scottish comedy industry.

Organiser Alan Anderson said: "2014 was an amazing year for Scotland and for Scottish Comedy. With the Commonwealth Games, the Referendum, and the Still Game reunion, Scotland's comedians had a once in a generation opportunity to cast their cheeky eyes on some of the most interesting events our nation has experienced. They rose to the occasion and did us proud."

Also up for awards are comedians Des Clarke, Frankie Boyle and Kevin Bridges.
