Libraries across East Renfrewshire are set to add new initiatives to a wider sustainability project just in time for Halloween.
East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure libraries will be hosting two “swaps”, one for wellies and one for Halloween costumes, as part of The Root Cause project which launched earlier this year.

The project aims to promote sustainability, spark conversations around climate change, and enhance the libraries’ key role in the community after receiving £14,240 from the Scottish Government’s Public Library Improvement Fund.
The Welly Swap started in September and runs throughout autumn. Families are encouraged to bring in clean wellies that no longer fit and browse for bigger sizes.
All the donated wellies will be stored at the libraries and can be picked up for free by other families.
The Halloween costume swap will run from October 3 to October 24. Children’s Halloween costumes can be donated at any of East Renfrewshire’s 10 libraries.
In the weeks leading up to Halloween, the costumes will be relocated to Barrhead Foundry and set out in stalls for families to browse.

Scott Simpson, head of libraries at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “East Renfrewshire libraries are at the heart of our communities, and we are committed to using our spaces to promote sustainability.
“We hope our welly and Halloween costume swaps offer a more sustainable approach to seasonal items that can be swapped when children outgrow them and also support families in saving money.”
The Root Cause project previously launched a Seed Library to give flower seeds to the local community with the goal of supporting the local environment and helping grow new flowers for pollinators like bees to thrive.
Thornliebank Library will collect, store, and distribute seeds like poppies, verbena, and other wildflowers which will also be planted in the Thornliebank library garden for the community to enjoy.
