A PRIEST has been killed following a "tragic attack" in Nigeria, the Archdiocese of Glasgow has revealed. 

Father Isaac Achi "burned to death" after it was alleged that people set fire to a parish residence on Sunday morning in Niger. 

A post on the Archdiocese of Glasgow revealed that the attack took place in the diocese which is home to three priests serving in Glasgow parishes - Fathers Thaddeus, Ezra and Chido.

People have been asked to remember the Nigerian priests in their prayers.

A post read: "Another tragedy in Nigeria has taken place with a priest burnt to death.

"The attack took place in the diocese which is home to three priests serving in Glasgow parishes - Fathers Thaddeus, Ezra and Chido.

"On Sunday morning in Nigeria's Niger State, a group of bandits attacked the parish residence of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kafin Koro, Paikoro region, before dawn.

"Their attack caused the death of Father Isaac Achi (pictured) and the wounding of Father Collins.

"Upon the arrival of security forces at the scene, the bandits fled, setting the house on fire from which Father Achi was unable to flee.

"Confirming the violent and tragic attack which took place around 3am, the state's police public relations officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said that 'the bandits attempted to enter the residence, but failed, and set fire to the house, while the Reverend Father died charred'.

"The lifeless body of Father Achi was recovered, 'while Father Collins was taken to hospital for treatment'. 

"The Commissioner of Police, State Command, Ogundele Ayodeji, sent a reinforcement team to the area 'and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the assailants, while investigations into the tragic attack have commenced'.

"Please remember all our Nigerian priests in your prayers as this awful unrest consumes their homeland."

Hundreds of people paid tribute to the priest. 

One person wrote: "So sad, God rest Fr Archi's soul. And healing prayers for Father Collins." 

Another person said: "This is very sad. RIP Fr Archi and prayers for our priests, heartbreaking." 

Someone added: "A terrible tragedy in another part of our sick world...may he now rest in peace in God’s arms. Praying for the surviving priests that God may give them the strength to carry on with their fantastic work."
