MORE than £2million of taxpayers' money was used to give a cash lifeline to thousands of poverty stricken families for food and heating.
Council chiefs in North Lanarkshire gave crisis grants averaging £85 each to more than 6100 cash-strapped households.
Finance convener Bob Burrows said: "In this day and age it is simply appalling."
