SHE could be Glasgow's most prolific young ­reader.

Alishba Ali, from King's Park, has made her way through 311 books this year... and she's only six years old.

The competitive youngster devours stories with help from her mum and two big sisters, Alisha, 14, and Aisha, 13.

Mum Shazia said: "Alishba is very competitive and her older cousins told her about this reading competition, so she wanted to win. She loves reading and already would read two books at a time but started taking out six then 10 books.

"Her big sisters help her when she gets stuck and her speech has improved so much."

The St Philan's Primary ­pupil borrows books from Langside Library.

Chairman of Glasgow Life, Councillor Archie Graham, said: "A love of reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children.

"No matter their interests and likes, they will never be bored if they have a book or comic in their hand.

"Young Alishba has clearly got the book-reading bug. To have read over 300 books is some achievement, but to do that aged six is altogether remarkable.

"Alishba is an inspiration and I congratulate her on this wonderful achievement and I commend her family for helping insert name enjoy her love of reading."

Alishba is one of thousands of children who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge.

On Saturday, more than 400 children gathered at the Mitchell Library to take part in a reading event to mark the end of the Summer Reading Challenge.

Run by charity The Reading Agency, with library services and Tesco Bank, the challenge involves children joining the library and reading six books during the summer holidays.

Award-winning children's author Lari Don, author of the Fabled Beast Chronicles met youngsters and hosted a storytelling session based on a Mythical Maze theme.

Each year the Challenge is based around a new theme and this year's invites children to discover more about myths and legends from around the world.
