THE number of operations cancelled following a "surge" in hospital admissions in Glasgow has risen to 37.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is dealing with the aftermath of a 25% rise in the number of patients at hospitals across the city earlier this week.

Some patients had to spend Monday night on trolleys at the city's Victoria Infirmary, where admissions rose by 24%.

A total of 50 patients were found care home places to free up beds and some emergency patients were diverted to other hospitals.

NHSGGC chief executive Robert Calderwood has apologised to patients for "unacceptable delays".

A spokeswoman for NHSGGC said: "Since Monday 37 routine elective procedures have been postponed.

"All urgent and cancer cases have been unaffected. All patients affected will be re-booked quickly and given an alternative admission date."
