A GROUP of 40 youngsters will cheer on Glasgow's professional basketball stars in a cup final thanks to the one of the team's sponsors.

The Glasgow Rocks play Worcester Wolves in the British Basketball League (BBL) Trophy final at Glasgow's Emirates Arena tomorrow.

And sponsors Speirs Gumley - a firm of leading property advisers - have donated 40 tickets for the match to two local causes - The Shettleston Growing Project Smelly Welly Club and Kirkriggs Primary School.

If the Rocks win the BBL Trophy final, it will see the team claim its first piece of silverware in 10 years. Speirs Gumley's marketing director, Bryan McManus, said: "One of the main reasons we were so keen to work with The Rocks was because of their community programmes.

"We know how hard the players and back room team work to engage with communities so we wanted to offer local kids the chance to go to the biggest game of the season and sample the fantastic Rocks Game day experience."

The Shettleston Community Growing Project is a not for profit organisation who work with all sections of the community to improve life for local people. Kirkriggs is a non-denominational primary school for boys and girls with Additional Learning Needs.

Glasgow Rocks train and play their home matches at the Emirates Arena and have been credited for a surge in interest in the sport in the city.

The club works alongside schools and the community, and Rocks players EJ Harrison and Alex Marcotullio this week joined youngsters from Cuckoo Basketball Club at their training session at Shawlands Academy.

l Glasgow Life, the Evening Times, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and SportScotland have joined forces in the Active 2014 campaign to encourage people to get fit and healthy.

Basketball is a fantastic way for children aged five and over, adults and people with a disability to improve their health and fitness levels.
