With just six days to go until the opening ceremony, Games bosses will announce today that 40,000 tickets remain unsold.

Despite massive demand from the public since the application and ticketing process began last August, there remains significant availability across most sports.

Fans will soon be able to buy the last remaining places over the counter at the Glasgow 2014 ticket office.

More than 1.1million tickets have so far been snapped up by spectators for the 17 sports, plus the opening and closing ceremonies.

Commonwealth Gold medallist boxer Alex Arthur will mark the final countdown to the Games and raise awareness of the availability for tickets this afternoon.

The last push comes following a series of ticketing problems in the lead up to the 11-day event.

In May, Games chiefs were forced to shut down their ticketing website and hotline a day after 10,000 extra tickets went on sale.

Fans blasted organisers for being left waiting for hours online and on the phone.

The following week, on May 19, they went back on sale in a phased approach to ensure there were no more technical problems.

Organisers say they hope to offer as many tickets as possible for sale and that more seats continue to become available as the final details are set in place.
