MOTORISTS in Somerset have woken this morning to find their cars covered in snow.

As forecasted, snow showers overnight have covered large areas of the county.

Although the main roads are reasonably clear at present, motorists are being urged to take care on the minor roads where snow and ice could make driving difficult.

Anyone travelling from Bristol Airport is advised to check with their airline for details.

Berry's coaches have cancelled their London-bound services from Ilminster, Yeovil, Wincanton, Taunton, Wellington, North Petherton and Bridgwater today due to the weather.

Somerset has escaped the heaviest of the snowfalls that have hit other parts of England.

Reports are coming that there is about a centimetre of snow on the ground in the south of the county and on the Blackdown Hills.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "It can take ten times longer to stop in icy conditions. Keep your distance. Allow extra room to slow down and stop. Slow down and avoid making any sharp driving movements."
