A new £44million 'community campus' is a step closer to completion.

Contractors Graham Construction have made the building – housing schools and leisure facilities – wind and water tight.

The Slaemuir complex will become the new home for Port Glasgow High and St Stephen's High Schools as well as a new Additional Support Needs School to replace Glenburn and Lilybank schools.

Inverclyde Council leader Stephen McCabe said: "These are exciting times for education in Inverclyde.

"The new Community Campus is a fantastic facility and the jewel in the crown of our ambitious schools estate programme.

"It has been fascinating to watch the complex take shape and I am hugely impressed with the attention to detail and the quality of the work.

"Staff and pupils will be able to enjoy the best possible environment when it is completed and the wider community will be able to make use of the fantastic facilities."

Port Glasgow High and St Stephen's will have their own entrances and classrooms but will share the 'agora' social hub.

The agora – Greek for gathering place – will also connect to the ASN school and all the shared facilities.

These include and art, music, science and technology block, a sports block and a performing arts area.

The new ASN school will cater for nursery, primary and secondary pupils.

Leisure facilities include a multi-use games area, fully equipped fitness suite and gym and two all-weather pitches, which will be available for community use.

The campus is set to be finished this October.
