A £4.7MILLION project to transform Gourock town centre has taken a major step forward.

The Gourock Central Development has been approved by Inverclyde Council's planning board.

The project includes a new one-way system in Kempock Street, more than 400 car parking spaces, a new public space and small boat launch facility at Pierhead, and a redesign of public spaces at each end of Kempock Street.

Council Leader councillor Stephen McCabe said: "This is an important milestone for a project representing the biggest single investment in Gourock for many years.

"There has been a lot of debate over the past few months but I am confident the plans have taken the view of local people and businesses on board and have come up with the best possible solution.

"It is vital that we improve the shopping and visiting experience for people while ensuring local businesses and traders benefit."

During the public consultation process, 178 people made representations of which 51 objected, 124 supported and three provided observations.

Councillor McCabe added: "It is a balanced proposal and one that will improve traffic flow through Gourock, will enhance available parking for residents and visitors and improve the public realm."

In 2009 Inverclyde Council agreed to sell 320 sq m of land to Network Rail to allow the firm to press ahead with a new £5m train station at Gourock.

Incorporating the land into the development allowed wider regeneration plans to be considered.
