RESEARCHERS battling heart disease at the Universtity of Glasgow have been awarded more than £4milllion to continue their work.

The awards are part of a £5m boost for heart research in Scotland from the British Heart Foundation.

The BHF announced the awards following the launch of Fight for Every Heartbeat, a UK-wide campaign to highlight the suffering caused by heart disease and how the charity is fighting back through research.

Marjory Burns, director of BHF Scotland, said: "Through research, we're fighting for every heartbeat, so that one day we can put an end to the devastation heart disease brings.

"These pioneering research projects are bringing us a step closer to winning the battle against heart disease.

"We couldn't fund the research teams here at the University of Glasgow without the support of local people."

Among the funding allocation, the BHF has given three new awards to Professor Rhian Touyz, a combined total of more than £2.75m.

The awards include the title of BHF Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, which brings with it £1.2m of support to facilitate the scientist's move from the University of Ottawa in Canada.

As well as funding Professor Touyz's salary, the Professor award will pay the salary of a lecturer, to oversee elements of Professor Touyz's research programme.
