FLOATING hotels using Harwich Harbour to accomodate tourists during the Olympics is a “definate possibility”, according to Harwich Haven Authority.

The company spoke out this week after rumours circulated the town that the authority was in talks to secure the use of hotel ships for Harwich during the 2012 event.

The move would see passengers from across the globe staying on large cruise liners in the harbour before docking at the international port and boarding direct trains to London every day.

Stephen Bracewell, chief executive of Harwich Haven Authority, said: “It would absolutely be a welcome opportunity.

“This isn’t an unusual concept and it is a definate possiblity.

“We would have to work in conjunction with Harwich International Port and other agencies though to make sure everyone was satisfied “Safety and the protection of the environment would of course have to be considered.”

But although the company says it would support such an idea, it is not aware of any offers being made yet.
