A WOMAN is campaigning for all schoolchildren to wear high-visibility jackets while out on the road following the death of a 13-year-old Wedmore boy.
Jane Bowe lives a few doors away from the family of Elliot Davies, who was killed after being hit by a car while waiting for the school bus last January.
Mum-of-two Jane is backing West Somerset Coroner Michael Rose's calls to provide all schoolchildren with the reflective jackets to keep them safe on the roads.
She told the Weekly News: “I was so shocked at what happened to Elliot, and knowing his family quite well I felt compelled to do something.
“I am a director of a business in Wells and thought 'why not sponsor these reflective jackets and provide them to as many schools as possible?'
“I am urging other companies to follow suit - the jackets only cost £3.95 to make and you can't put a price on a child's life. It's a no-brainer.”
Elliot's mother Kirsty has pledged to support the campaign and three primary schools have already received a bundle of jackets.
Somerset County Council is also supplying jackets for £5 each or free of charge to low-income families.
Jane added: “People have been starting to show a bit of interest but it is a bit slow at the moment. I want this to be as big as it possibly can and the sky is the limit.”
