YOUNGSTERS had their fingers on the buzzers as Malvern St James hosted a heat in the Junior Schools Challenge Competition - which closely mimics the format of the popular television programme University Challenge.

The popular general knowledge competition has been running for 26 years and sees the country divided into 16 regions, each run as a separate competition on a knockout basis.

On Tuesday afternoon (February 23) Malvern St James hosted one of the Bristol and West Midlands heats, which included teams from the Royal Grammar School, King’s School and St Mary’s in Worcester.

After a tense competition that went right down to the final question the Royal Grammar School won the event and will now head to the regional finals.

Regional organiser Sue Berridge said: “Students love to take part in this competition as it gives them the opportunity to work as a team and test their general knowledge.

“Using the buzzers for the starter questions makes it very like the television programme.”
