TALENTED musicians at a Harpenden school raised almost £600 in their lunch hour by staging a sell-out concert for Haiti's earthquake victims.

Music rang out of St George's School as students held a lunchtime charity gig to raise money for the ongoing aid relief mission in the devastated country.

Organised by sixth form prefects, including head boy Jack Wady and head girl Bernadette Whittle, the sell out concert, which included performances from school bands and singers, managed to raise £583 towards the cause. The concert was staged before pupils broke for the February half-term holiday, but the takings were only counted when staff and pupils returned on Monday.

Headmaster Norman Hoare said: “ Our brilliant young people put this concert on by themselves and organised everything.

"It was a tremendous achievement and was sold out on the day raising a magnificent £583.

"I was hosting another event during that lunch hour on the other side of the school and couldn’t be with them, so Jack and Bernadette wanted to surprise me with their takings. I was certainly caught in a shower, and delighted for the benefit the money will bring for the people of Haiti.”

In total the school has stumped up around £1,000 for the devastated country.
