IT is worrying news that the town’s famous Octagon theatre has been having revenue problems.

Ticket sales have been down by a quarter during the past year, although theatre bosses are optimistic and a huge Arts Council grant has helped the 43 year-old theatre balance the books.

The Octagon is one of the town’s treasures.

It has notched up a string of artistic break-throughs over the years and become a breeding ground for genuine talent of all kinds.

It’s true that supporting our local theatre doesn’t stack up well against mounting domestic bills and threatened jobs, but it is important that we continue to do this.

The Octagon is a source of artistic pride for the town and promises much for the future.

It would be unthinkable for it to close.
