YOUNG photographers from St Mary’s Primary in Tetbury have been awarded best primary school in Gloucestershire for photography.

Jules Casey, aged five, came second with his photo Double Trouble and eight-year-old Connor Toop came closely behind with Boo! in Cheltenham Camera Club’s annual competition.

Headteacher Stef Etherington said: "We were delighted by the number of students that entered and are extremely proud that we won Best Primary School in Gloucestershire. We’re looking forward to getting the photos back so that we can put them up around the school and on the website."

Teachers at St Mary’s Primary encouraged students to take part in school assemblies, but all the hard work was done at home. The school has entered for the last four years but this is the first time it has won the best overall primary school title.

The club gathered 319 entries from 30 schools, prizes for which were presented by professional snapper Grant Scott, editor of Photography Monthly Magazine.

The Camera Club’s exhibition featured 104 entries from both primary and secondary schools.

Images will appear in national magazine Photography Monthly.

Katherine Lady Berkeley’s School in Cheltenham did well in the secondary section with Alastair Johnstone’s photograph Strawberries and Cream coming second and Joe York’s Egyptian Desert being Highly Commended.

The Exhibition is open daily from 10am – 4pm at All Saints Church, Cheltenham and runs until March 13.
