LEDBURY is to host the last in a series of four talks on Cardinal John Henry Newman, the priest and theologian who wrote the poem The Dream of Gerontius, on which local composer Sir Edward Elgar based his famous oratorio.
The talk takes place at Holy Trinity Church, in New Street, at 7.30pm on Monday (March 15) and will be delivered by Monsignor Patrick Kilgarriff, who will focus on Newman’s poem.
The series of talks have been organised by local Roman Catholic churches ahead of a visit to the UK by Pope Benedict this September, when he will bestow the title of ‘Blessed’ on Newman.
Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free. Talks held to date in and around the Malvern area have been a big success, with each attracting about 90 people.
