THE work to alter the Brewery Corner junction in Devizes has stopped - this time because the temporary traffic lights are not working.

Southern Electric staff began work yesteday to move electricity cables which were found to be closer to the surface than expected when workers at Wiltshire Council's contractors Parkman began digging up Gaiger Brothers car park in Northgate Street last month.

Southern Electric used temporary traffic lights yesterday to provide a safe working area for its staff but the lights caused long tail backs for motorists.

The traffic lights were due to be working today but a spokesman for Wiltshire Council said there was a fault with them and so work has stopped on the site until they can be fixed.

The spokesman also said the lights were not manually controlled yesterday as agreed.

He said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused. The lights may be back working today if they are fixed in time. The work will continue tomorrow with the lights in operation. We have told Southern Electric to avoid working on Thursday due to it being market day. We are pretty certain that the lights will be back on Friday."

Once Southern Electric has finished diverting the cables Wiltshire Council's contractors will create additional lanes in New Park Street and Northgate Street by Wadworth Brewery to improve the capacity of the junction.
