UP TO 15,000 bikers are revving up for a mass ride on Sunday to raise money for war veterans charity Afghan Heroes.

The ride, which sets off from Hullavington Airfield from 11am, will take them to Wootton Bassett, the scene of regular corteges carrying fallen soldiers from the Afghan campaign.

What started as a Facebook discussion is set to raise in the region of £50,000 for the organisation, which sends home comforts out to military personnel in the war zone and provides support groups for their families.

Police have warned of traffic delays along the route throughout the day.

Chief Inspector Owen Gillard said: "As a force we fully support Afghan Heroes and the excellent work that they do.

"It’s wonderful to see so many bikers registered to take part in this event for such a worthy cause, however other motorists who are planning to travel along the proposed route that day should be aware that traffic delays are likely and I would urge them to consider other routes."

Riders are meeting at the airfield from 8am and are expected to started dispersing from the Coped Hall roundabout at 6pm.

Temporary traffic lights are being set up on the A429 close to the airfield and the bikers will travel in batches of 500 towards Malmesbury, before turning onto the B4042 to Callow Hill then heading down White Hill Lane for the A3102 south of Wootton Bassett.
