£55million is to be invested to create five new health centres across Glasgow.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde plans to build state-of-the-art facilities in Eastwood, Maryhill, the Gorbals, East Pollokshields and Woodside.

Robert Calderwood, Chief Executive, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "Over the next couple of years we will deliver the next stage of modernisation of our community and primary care facilities.

"Progress has also been made on a new health centre in Possilpark, which is due to open next month.

"Agreeing a new funding model, through the Scottish Government's hub initiative, is allowing us to build another five health centres, giving patients access to some of the best in modern healthcare facilities."

The new Eastwood Health and Care Centre, which will be sited at Drumby Crescent in Clarkston, received around a quarter of the total funding and will accommodate three GP surgeries.

Patients will also be able to access physiotherapy and podiatry clinics, adult and older people's mental health services and children and family services, as well as social work services, district nurses and allied health professionals.

The facility in East Pollokshields, dubbed The Shields Centre, will be developed on the site of an old blaze pitch in McCulloch Street and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

£12.3 million will be put into Woodside's new development, however a location for the facility is still to be confirmed.

All services in the existing health centre will be transferred to the new complex, and a day care centre for older people is planned to be run by Glasgow City Council.

There will be NHS-run Specialist Children's Services and Community Addictions Services, with the first patients expected to be able to use the centre by 2016.

Gairbraid Avenue in Maryhill will be the base for a new health centre to replace the existing Shawpark Street site.

Housing four GP surgeries and a range of other health services including dentists, nursing, health visitors and physiotherapy, it is forecast for completion by early 2015.

The site of the old Sandiefield Road flats in the Gorbals is planned to be used to develop part of the area's facility, at a cost of £13m.

Plans have not yet been finalised for the new site but work is expected to start later this year.
