A SCIENCE team from Glasgow University has been awarded £8.3million in funding for research into tropical diseases.

The Wellcome Trust Centre For Molecular Parasitology (WTCMP) and Glasgow University have been awarded the cash over the next seven years for research into illnesses such as malaria.

Established more than 25 years ago, the WTCMP houses world-renowned research scientists who collaborate with colleagues all over the globe.

WTCMP director Professor Andy Waters said: "The Wellcome Trust have generously recognised the quality of the work that we do at WTCMP.

"This level of support allows us to continue to improve our already considerable infrastructure and to recruit world-class scientists and teams.

"In the coming years this will translate into scientific discovery hopefully leading to therapies for parasitic diseases that remain the scourge of much of the poorer regions of the world."
