A 73-year-old man suffered a broken nose after a "callous" attempted robbery in Glasgow's West End.

The elderly man was walking on the footpath between Maryhill Road and Queen Margaret Drive, behind Belhaven Nursery School, when he was approached by a thug who demanded his wallet.

When the pensioner refused to hand his wallet over, he was punched and fell to the ground.

The suspect then made off towards Queen Margaret Drive without the victim's wallet.

The man was taken to hospital where he received treatment for a broken nose.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the attack, which happened on Friday at 7.20pm.

The suspect is described as a white Scottish man, around18-25 years old with a medium build.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a dark coloured hooded top with the hood up, and a distinctive white or light coloured scarf or snood over his lower face.

Detective Constable Adam Richardson from the Community Investigation Unit said: "This was a particularly callous incident involving a vulnerable elderly victim.

"The victim was struck with enough force to leave him with a broken nose that required hospital treatment."

"Our enquiries are continuing. We are analysing available CCTV in the area. We are now seeking the assistance of the public to trace the man responsible "The victim was wearing an orange high-visibility jacket.

"If you were in the area of Queen Margaret Drive around the time of the incident, we ask that you get in contact if you have any information which may assist our enquiry."
