A GLASGOW-based college is about to be live on air as it launches its own radio station.

Glasgow Clyde College will launch the GCR station onTuesday April 21, which will see live broadcast transmissions from all three of its campuses but will be based in Cardonald.

The station is open to studio and staff from all courses across the college and is already set to host a large number of shows.

Listeners will be kept entertained with the diverse programme line-up, including a football show, a film review show and even a make-up show.

The Evening Times will act as a news partner to the station, while Radio Clyde will be the rebroadcast partner.

Salima Punjani, the deputy station manager, has flown from her hometown in Canada to be part of GCR.

The 28-year-old said: "I did a year in Lancaster from 2006 to 2007 and during that time I travelled to Scotland and I loved everything about it so when I saw the posting for this position I thought it was amazing."

And Miss Punjani has said that station listeners will be in for a treat as the production team and presenters are "really very good."

She added: "It's been amazing to watch.

"That's the best thing about radio - it's empowering, it gives people a sense of confidence and it builds communities.

"It's starting to build a community here of people who might not have met without it.

"It's a real hub for community."

The station, which will be available online through the Glasgow Clyde College website, has also provided the opportunity for students who are learning English as a second language to tell their stories.

Miss Punjani said: "The teachers of the English as a second language want to do a show with their students because they have such incredible stories to tell of how they got here and how they are overcoming everything.

"It will be amazing to see their confidence build."

And for second year media student, Paulina Kuchorew, her position as co-assistant manager at the station has led her to consider a career in radio production.

She said: "I fell into radio by accident.

"I had to do a podcast as part of my studies and I loved it.

"I think a lot of people under estimate how much fun radio can be.

"On launch day, I'll be out at one of the other campuses talking to students and promoting the station.

"I am really excited, I love talking to people and showing what the university has to offer."
