AN after-school centre in Glasgow's West End which was not properly insured to care for children has closed down.

The Care Inspectorate raised "serious concerns" about Thornwood Out of School Service during several inspections.

It is understood there were several unresolved issues including a failure by the owner to have the relevant insurance to run the service.

A spokesman for the Care Inspectorate confirmed that the service had cancelled its registration.

The privately run service, which cared for 32 children, was given a '2' rating for care during a recent, snap inspection, the second lowest grade that can be awarded.

Inspectors found a volunteer had been taken on to help with children during busy periods but there was no evidence that any background checks had been carried out.

The Care Inspectorate is working with Glasgow City Council to relocate children to an alternative service.

One mum said: "The service has been closed because it didn't have insurance.

"The manager has resigned. My child has been there for five years.

"It's just disgusting to think that my child has been there with no insurance.

"We don't know how long that's been going on."

A spokesman for the Care Inspectorate said: "We have raised a number of serious concerns about this service at several inspections, relating to the quality of care being provided to children and other issues.

"We have continued to work closely with the management of this service to help them improve.

"However, following our most recent inspection carried out in January, numerous issues were unresolved and the service cancelled its registration.

"We are working closely with the management committee and the city council to ensure a service for the children and parents has been maintained with another provider.

"Our first priority is always the safety and welfare of children and we continue to work with this service to ensure the children affected receive the appropriate care and support."

Inspectors found that during one outing the manager failed to carry out a risk assessment and told inspectors it had been done "in her head".

The service was also rated weak for staffing and environ-ment and unsatisfactory for management during the inspection on January 21.

No one from the service was available for comment.

Parents will be assisted in finding suitable out-of-school provision for their children.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: "Parents will be given information and help as to where to access alternative out-of-school provision in the vicinity."
