BUDGET airline bosses plan a long, hot summer next year by handling a record 650,000 holidaymakers in and out of Glasgow for the first time.

Jet2.com is laying on more destinations and more flights as well as providing 130,000 extra seats and adding another holiday plane to the fleet of four already based at the airport.

The boost underlines the airline's rapid expansion since it began flying in and out of Glasgow in the spring of 2011. It took off with a workforce of 150 which has now grown to almost 200.

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and sister firm Jet2holidays, said: "Following two and a half successful years we are thrilled to be celebrating further growth at Glasgow.

"Since our first flight took off, we've not only increased capacity, we have also more than tripled our destinations from seven to 24. Plus we've continued to invest in the area with the creation of further jobs.

"These developments demonstrate our ongoing commitment to local customers with unrivalled choice and flexibility, with great value and award- winning service."

Airport boss Amanda McMillan added: "The past two and a half years have been extremely exciting for the airport, during which time we have enjoyed a steady increase in passenger numbers.

"Jet2.com has played a huge role in this sustained period of growth cementing its position as one of our most popular airlines.

"It has continued to add capacity, create jobs and provide passengers with greater choice and I am delighted it has reaffirmed its commitment to the airport with the introduction of a fifth aircraft."
