MORE than 110,000 holidaymakers will travel through Glasgow Airport this weekend – marking the peak of a bumper summer with an anticipated 4.4million passengers.

The four days, from tomorrow to Monday, are one of the busiest periods of the year for airport staff as the end of the school term heralds the start of the summer rush.

But with Glasgow Airport's total summer passenger numbers predicted to hit 4,394,409 by October – 75,590 more than last year – the hordes of holidaymakers will continue to flock.

To cope with this weekend's influx, extra staff have been drafted into Glasgow Airport to see off thousands of passengers.

Tomorrow will be the busiest day of the weekend when 29,863 passengers will land and depart in just 24 hours.

The airport says the majority of travellers will jet from Glasgow to holiday destinations Palma, Alicante, Tenerife, Turkey and Florida.

Hundreds of travellers will also fly to Amsterdam, London and Dubai for city breaks as well as to board connecting flights to onward destinations around the world.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "We are looking forward to a lot of hard work over the next few days but also a fantastic atmosphere."

Staff at Glasgow Airport are now preparing for the crowds and senior managers and back office personnel will take up positions in the main terminal buildings to provide support to passengers.

Prestwick Airport is also expecting a busy weekend with 7000 passengers travelling through the gates – 10% more than last year.

A spokesman for the airport said: "We have 27 destinations from Prestwick and are operating 95 flights a week."
