CANCER patients in Glasgow are the first in the UK to benefit from free classes in an ancient Chinese exercise regime.

Libraries across the city are running classes in Chi Gung, which have been specially adapted for people undergoing treatment for cancer.

Chi Gung, which means 'move energy', focuses on breathing, gentle movement and meditation to help improve flexibility and calm the mind.

The classes are being run by Macmillan Cancer Support, in partnership with Glasgow Life, as a new addition to the charity's library information service.

The practice can be done seated or standing, and has been shown to help improve muscular conditioning, while also helping to reduce anxiety and depression.

Aislinn Gallanagh, a teacher at St Blane's Primary, Summerston, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010.

The 34-year-old, from Moodiesburn, North Lanarkshire, said: "My mind was so full of anxieties and fears. I was falling apart inside, rushing around, doing everything I could to take my mind off things.

"The classes freed up my head. I met a friend afterwards and she said it was the first time in two years she had seen the old me.

"I learned to meditate and have continued to practise this when I am unable to sleep or having nightmares.

"Being with other people who were recovering from cancer meant I didn't have to explain anything, I wasn't being scrutinised."

The classes gave Aislinn, who has a three-year-old son, Odhran, the confidence to return to the gym, where she has progressed to the more rigorous exercise regime of Metafit and spin.

She is now clear of cancer and said: "My mantra is it will never return."

Elspeth Atkinson, director of Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "Twenty years ago the advice by doctors would be to rest during and after cancer treatment, but that is not the case now.

"We now know being active during and after treatment can maintain physical function, minimise the side effects of treatment and can help prevent recurrence of cancer. That is major.

"Our medical director said if this was a drug, it would be hailed a miracle drug."
