Glasgow MP Ann McKechin has called for support from the Scotland Office to assist a world renowned musician threatened with removal.

Ms McKechin today wrote to the Secretary of State for Scotland, Alistair Carmichael, asking him to intervene and assist a well-known musician faced with extradition.

Dr Steve Forman, a 68-year-old US citizen who works for the Royal Conservatoire, has been a resident in the UK since 2007 and is highly respected in his field.

Hundreds of supporters signed a petition last year calling on the UK government to allow him to stay.

Ms McKechin said: "I was contacted last year by Dr Forman and I supported his application for leave to remain based on his considerable talent, his contribution to the arts in Scotland and the fact that he was financially self-sufficient.

"This was truly an exceptional case.

"Like many others, I welcomed the decision in mid-January by the Immigration Tribunal to grant his application for Indefinite Leave to Remain. The Tribunal judge stated that the case was "exceptionally strong and compelling.

"The Royal Conservatoire immediately went about re-scheduling his classes to eager students who have not been able to learn from Dr Forman while the case was being considered.

"However I was dismayed to find out yesterday that the Home Office have applied for the right to appeal the decision - this is frankly an outrageous response to a case which had clear merit and has been a bitter blow to Dr Forman who is desperate to make Scotland his new permanent home.

"I along with many others do not want him to endure yet another long period in limbo and with the worry and frustration this brings."
