SCOTLAND'S most senior Catholic cleric has returned to Glasgow after suffering a heart attack abroad.

Archbishop Philip Tartaglia arrived back in the city early yesterday evening from Spain.

The 64-year-old was rushed to hospital on Thursday last week after falling ill in the Spanish city of Salamanca.

He had gathered there with other bishops for an annual winter meeting.

A spokesman has confirmed he will now take some time to recover before returning to his duties.

The spokesman said: "The Archbishop wishes to thank the medical team of the University Hospital Salamanca for their care.

"He also expresses his thanks to the Rector and staff of the Royal Scots College, to his fellow Bishops, the Catholic community in Scotland, and all who have prayed for him and expressed their good wishes.

"He is grateful to the First Minister for her good wishes and to Rt.Rev.John Chalmers, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, for the prayerful good wishes of the Church of Scotland.

"He also extends his thanks to everyone who offered prayers and good wishes by text, email or twitter. The Archbishop is humbled and deeply grateful."
