PROTESTERS have stepped up plans to stop a large area of a Glasgow park being rented out.

Friends Of Victoria Park want people to gather in the West End green space and form a human chain as a demonstration.

The protest is due to take place the weekend before the September 26 closing date for bids in response to an advert marketing the former blaes playing fields for lease.

As the Evening Times revealed on August 14, property consultant Ryden listed the advert for the fields, describing it as "commercial development land."

In a report, the company listed potential uses for the north west area of the park, including a retail development, a pub or restaurant, a garden centre, an open-air market or children's soft play.

However, park users are angry at the plan, fearing they will lose their green space forever.

They are urging people to bring placards to the former pitches on Sunday, September 21 from 2pm to 2.30pm.

They will put their "arms around the park" by joining hands to show "how determined we are to maintain this site as a 'Dear Green' space".

Glasgow City Council said last year it was considering renting out park facilities in an attempt to generate funds.

But Robert Melish, convener of Friends Of Victoria Park, said: "It is a park and it should stay like that and not be put up for rent by the council.

"Everyone thinks it should be protected by our representatives, by the council."

Mr Melish 54, said the community should be asked what they want to see. He said: "We hope to see a community orchard and will be submitting proposals for that. But we can't compete with big developers."

A council spokesman said: "The council works extensively with the local community and Friends Of group to help people make the best use - and encourage further use - of the park. The council will always be happy to work constructively with the group."
