ARSON thugs torched the £400,000 former home of a Glasgow gangster, the Evening Times can reveal.

Detectives have launched a major probe into the blaze at Jamie Daniel's ex-home in the West End.

Emergency services, including fire crews and police, raced to the mansion in Munro Street after the alarm was raised.

It is understood the fire-raisers started the blaze in the upper floor - possibly in the attic or roof space.

The stone-built semi-detached property in Jordanhill was targeted in a late-night attack last Thursday,

Fire chiefs said a 999 call was received shortly before 11am.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed the blaze was being treated as "wilful" and a investigation had been launched.

Mr Daniel, a convicted drug dealer, lived at the house for a number of years, although he also frequented other addresses, including some overseas.

It was near the Munro Road home that Mr Daniel become involved in a road-rage incident that earned him a year in jail, in 2010.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We received a 999 call shortly before 10.50pm on Thursday reporting a property on fire at Munro Road.

"Two appliances were immediately sent from Knightswood Community Fire Station and our crews reached the scene around three minutes later.

"They saw smoke issuing from the roof and two firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the property, using a high pressure jet to extinguish a fire in a bedroom and in the roof-space.

"A systematic search was conducted both inside the affected house and a neighbouring property, which confirmed no-one was inside.

"Our crews used a thermal imaging camera while working to ensure there was no hidden fire spread.

"Specialist officers from our Fire Investigation Unit attended the scene and worked closely with police colleagues to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident."

In 2012, the house was at the centre of a major 'dirty money' probe.
