John McAslan and Partners has been selected for the Queen's Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2014.

The London practice run by Mr McAslan has been honoured for its work in countries including Russia, Qatar and Rio de Janeiro.

Mr McAslan came up with the winning design for the revamp of George Square but was told within minutes the project had been scrapped.

His practice is working on projects in Russia including a 10-storey commercial building in St Petersburg and the transformation of the historic Bolshevik factory in Moscow.

Other Moscow projects include transport hubs and the award-winning Olympia business park, now home to BMW's Russian HQ.

In Qatar, the practice is delivering 16 projects in Doha. They include a cultural forum, the five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the Park Hyatt Hotel, a mosque, a school and four museums.

The firm is designing significant additions to the British School in Rio de Janeiro, a masterplan for the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria in Canada and a transport hub in New Delhi.

Mr McAslan is also working on a luxury homes complex in Latvia and a new settlement in Nairobi. An amphitheatre in Rwanda has just opened and the firm is designing schools in Malawi and Uganda.

Mr McAslan said: "It is a great honour to be recognised in this way."

Two firms from Glasgow have won Queen's Awards.

Axis Productions Ltd and Tissue Solutions Ltd won the awards for their outstanding overseas earnings growth.
