IT has been 40 years since Rangers scored their greatest European victory - and to celebrate, fans can enjoy a nostalgic evening with the Barcelona Bears.

A tribute dinner to mark the anniversary of the Ibrox side's 3-2 Cup Winners' Cup Final victory over Moscow Dynamo will take place at Glasgow's Thistle Hotel on Friday, May 18.

Willie Johnston's double and Colin Stein's strike in the Catalan city's Nou Camp stadium on May 24, 1972 earned the Light Blues' a stunning victory over the Russian team and now fans can salute Willie Waddell's side at the celebratory dinner.

Andy Cameron will host the event while former Rangers player Sir Alex Ferguson will be a guest speaker. Profits will be split among the 1972 Cup Winners' Cup squad.

Tommy McLean, part of the winning team, said: "It will be good to see all the lads again and nice of the club and the supporters to acknowledge, in this way, what that team did.

"To win a European trophy was a magnificent achievement, ranking highly in the club's history.

"It is great of Sir Alex to give up his time for the dinner."

SportsTimes columnist Derek Johnstone added: "It is incredible to think that it was 40 years ago we won the European Cup Winners' Cup.

"It is wonderful of the club to recognise our achievement in this way."
