FOOTBALL fans are being given the chance to own a piece of sporting history.

A Scotland cap awarded to the late Rangers legend Jim Baxter is being sold in Glasgow.

The midfielder played 34 times for his country, but only received five caps, as players were only awarded one cap per season at that time.

Baxter won the cap after the 1961-62 British Home Championship.

Baxter, nicknamed 'Slim Jim', died at the age of 61 in 2001, after a long battle with alcoholism.

The cap was previously on display at Ibrox Stadium. It is expected to fetch between £5000 and £8000 at a sports memorabilia sale at McTears on Sunday.

Brian Clements from McTear's said: "Jim Baxter is a true footballing legend – one of the greatest Scots to have played the game.

"This cap will appeal not only to Rangers and Scotland fans but collectors of all sports memorabilia."

Other items going under the hammer include a winner's medal given to half-back Patrick McEvoy when Celtic won the 1918-19 League championship.

Valued at £1000 to £1500 the medal joins other Celtic mementos in the sale, such as a copy of Tommy Gemmell's autobiography signed by all the Lisbon Lions, including manager Jock Stein.

The sale takes place at McTear's on Sunday at 1pm.
