TWO women were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the bedroom of a flat in Glasgow's South Side.

Fire crews were called to the flat in Leithland Avenue in the Pollok area about 3.20am yesterday.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat and found the women, who were given oxygen therapy but did not require hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We received an emergency call from a member of the public about 3.20am and two appliances were dispatched by Operations Control in Johnstone.

"A team of four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat and used a single high-pressure water jet to extinguish the flames, which had taken hold inside a bedroom.

"Crews provided oxygen therapy to two women who were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and requested an ambulance in which they received a precautionary check-up.

"Firefighters continued at the scene, checking for signs of fire spread and using a fan to clear the smoke."

He added that the responsibility to prevent fires rests with all householders.

He said: "It's important we never overload electrical sockets, leave candles or smoking materials unattended when lit, or leave appliances like hair straighteners switched on.

"Deadly smoke, heat and flames can spread in an instant.

"If fire does break out, it is vital people have the early warning and time needed to get to safety."
