MEET Scotland's most generous blood donor.

Thomas Bradley, 70, has just parted with his 660th pint of blood - the highest amount ever recorded for any one person in Scotland.

The pensioner has helped more than 2000 people to survive, including babies, transplant patients and accident victims.

Thomas, from Barrhead in East Renfrewshire, was inspired to give his first pint at the age of 26 to help a neighbour's seven-year-old son, who as suffering from leukemia.

The little boy sadly died but Thomas said the experience inspired him to continue to donate.

Decades later the retired joiner, who is married to Linda, is still rolling up his sleeve and says he will keep going for as long as he can.

The father-of-one needed a pint himself after a serious motorbike accident in 1971.

Thomas was presented with a special award and a gold watch yesterday by the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service.

He was joined at Glasgow City Chambers by another champion donor, David Walker, from Kilmacolm, who has donated 600 pints.

Thomas said: "The first time was to help a wee boy of seven, a family friend who had leukemia. I was asked to give a donation.

"They tell you the amount I have given will have saved 2000 lives but everyone helps, the surgeons and the doctors.

"I've been very lucky, I've stayed healthy.

"I was at the doctor recently and he looked at my records and said: 'I don't know what you are taking, but keep taking it'.

"I'll keep going for as long as I can."

Alison Maung, of the SNBTS, said: "As far as we're aware it's the first time in Scotland we have had anyone donating 660 pints.

"Donors like Thomas and David are a lifeline."

Blood donors are being urged to come forward in the run-up to the festive season.

November through to New Year is traditionally a "challenging" time for blood stocks. For more information about giving blood, visit www.scotblood.co.uk/
