A GLASGOW community came together to sponsor a six-year-old BMX star as he prepares for the World Championships.

Harrison Bell, from Drumchapel, will compete at the UCI BMX Championships in the Netherlands next week after becoming the top Scottish BMX racer in his age group.

As the Evening Times reported last year, Harrison's mum Carol Ann Brady died in 2011, leaving behind the youngster and dad Warren, 40. Since then Warren has supported Blairdardie Primary pupil Harrison through countless BMX competitions.

Nearly every weekend the pair travel the country - and when Harrison is not competing, he is training with the Western Titans Racing Club.

Blairdardie resident and community activist Greta Riddell, who won the Evening Times Community Champions Senior Award last year, was so inspired by the father and son team that she decided to try and help.

Greta, 79, is a former cyclist who met her husband John, 81, in the early 1950s on a bike trip at Aviemore.

She said: "Harrison is totally unspoiled, despite his talent, and just a lovely boy. He loves cycling and every- one just wanted to see him go to the championships and keep competing."

Greta got in touch with Glasgow Charities Club, which donated £250 to help with Harrison's expenses on the trip. Greta said: "They were more than happy to help out because they saw how hard Harrison and Warren have been working."

Warren's fiancee Carol Ann contracted a viral infection in February 2011. She died 16 days after being admitted to hospital when she was 34-years-old.

Warren said: "When I see how determined Harrison is I think he's just like his mum.

"But the main thing is he just loves being on his bike, even when it's pouring rain.

"He's so excited for the trip abroad."
